Covid-19 shielding doctors: HCSA is there for you, says President

HCSA has urged members in the most vulnerable “shielding” category for Covid-19 to get in touch if they are concerned about their work situation after 1st August, when current guidelines are scheduled to change in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Guidelines for shielding individuals will also be paused in Wales from 16th August.

The change means that if you have been shielding you may be expected to return to work, provided your workplace is “Covid secure”.

Employers should be carrying out a thorough risk assessment of all individuals affected, and ensuring that if they are expected to return into a work environment then necessary adjustments including redeployment are put into practice.

HCSA is calling on employers to err on the side of caution and continue to prioritise home working.

However, concerned members are urged to contact HCSA for assistance if they feel they are being placed in a situation which they feel is unsafe.

HCSA President Dr Claudia Paoloni said: “Clearly, the hospital setting is one which harbours a significantly higher risk of coronavirus infection than in our communities.

“You are not alone - this is precisely the issue that HCSA is here to assist you in resolving. We will do our best to work with you to address your concerns with your employer.”
