HCSA condemns utterly the far-right racist, xenophobic and Islamophobic violence and hate speech seen across the UK in recent days.
As doctors we are committed to treating all patients in need of care, regardless of background, and are proud to work as part of a diverse profession.
The medical workforce across Britain consists of doctors of many different ethnicities, religions, nationalities and identities. Our nation is cared for by people with origins and connections across the globe. Our health service could not exist without them.
Hospital doctors already faced widespread racism and discrimination in the workplace. Amid this wave of far-right violence, many members have expressed concern for their safety. Some have been asked to leave work early on certain days. Others have been frightened to travel to work. Still more have witnessed hateful violence in their communities and across the country. HCSA urges any members with concerns to get in touch with their union today. Members have the right not to put themselves in harm’s way.
Employers should do everything they can to support staff at this frightening time and fulfil their duties to keep them safe. This should include facilitating alternative transport arrangements where necessary, adjusting working arrangements to ensure staff safety, providing additional security where necessary and making clear to where and to whom within each organisation concerns can be effectively escalated. We are encouraged to see this support in place at certain employers.
Far-right racists will not win. HCSA stands shoulder to shoulder with our members and the entire trade union movement against racist hate.
If you are at all concerned for your safety at work, please contact HCSA immediately at advice@hcsa.com or on 01256 770999.
