HCSA members praise support ‘which cannot be understated’

HCSA helps hundreds of hospital doctors every year – and we’re proud of our dedicated personal support to members.

In an NHS under pressure union membership is not a luxury, it’s absolutely essential.

When one trust tried to squeeze out-of-hours payments to save money, doctors turned to HCSA to help fight the changes.

Their national officer provided “invaluable advice on our employment rights and the pay consultation process, which many of us were not familiar with,” they recall.

“He encouraged us to stay united and was a great source of moral support during a difficult period.

“HCSA’s support meant we were able to stand firm and defend our out-of-ours remuneration. It has given both the confidence and peace of mind that we would be well supported by the HCSA in the future.”

One doctor credits HCSA with saving her career after she reported a colleague for sexual assault.

“They have helped immeasurably, from a practical perspective making sure my employer was following policies and processes, providing legal advice, attending meetings for support. But they also saw more than just a member and a doctor and understood the wider impact of events on me and my family.

“While the events I went through were awful and I wouldn't wish anyone else to go through anything similar, the support provided to me has helped my personal growth. My knowledge and skills have improved, and I feel motivated and empowered to make changes.

“Without the package of support provided there is a real chance I would no longer be working in the NHS, never mind advocating for change.”

In a separate case a whistleblower found themselves excluded from work. HCSA provided support at management meetings, help with their grievance and secured legal assistance.

“The psychological support when you are isolated and vulnerable in such a difficult professional situation cannot be understated.

“This has meant a lot to me going through this time.”

Another explains the “magical effect” of copying their national officer into emails with HR. “They know that when I copy the HCSA in I’m serious and find time to reply to those emails, usually after weeks or months of me chasing them.”

HCSA makes a difference on a daily basis to doctors who need our help. Tragically, those without a union would have faced the same situations alone.
